Online databases

There are multiple online tools for evaluating schools. We say “the more the merrier.” Here are a few of them.

GreatSchools was started in 1997. You can use it to compare two schools, either by name or through a mapping interface. Perhaps more than the other two sites, it has information about private schools. It’s heavy on numbers, light on text.

You can choose from a list of several cities, or enter the name of a locality. For example, here’s what you get when you click on a link for “Best Schools in Wichita.”

Education.Com was started in 2007. It has a “School Finder” feature that isn’t yet available for Kansas. There’s plenty of other materials, including a discussion board and lots of articles. is a service of Standard and Poors. It has a load of statistics and graphs.
