KU Students Tutor K-12 Children in Reading

The Lawrence Journal-World has a feelgood story about KU students serving as reading tutors at schools around Lawrence.

Well, good for the KU students, who are able to do some work and get paid at the same time.

But don’t we already raise and appropriate taxes to pay people to do this? In another word, teachers?

What’s wrong with the school system as it is that it requires college students to step in to fill the gaps?
