The Problem with Middle School Achievement

We didn’t notice this, but an article in the Parson Sun points out that middle schools have done exceptionally bad on making Annual Yearly Progress, a measure under No Child Left Behind.

“Proehl said 40 percent of Kansas schools that failed to make AYP were middle schools.”

Linda Proehl is superintendent of the school district in Parsons. The middle school didn’t make AYP: “Parsons Middle School’s African-American students did not reach adequate yearly progress in reading or math and the district did not reach reading indicators for students with disabilities.”

Source: School didn’t make reading mark, December 19.
