Trouble Tapping Teachers

Where have all the teachers gone?

“In the next five years, 25 percent of the licensed teachers will be eligible for retirement and 34 percent are over the age of 50,” according to interim education commissioner Dale Dennis.

Recruiting math and science teachers is especially difficult in western Kansas, says the Newton Kansan.

Here’s an idea: pay those teachers more. Unlock them from scale that says pay is determined by the number of your college credits  and years on the job. Teacher pay should market realities. This includes pay for performance, and pay for demand outside school.
