Market Differentiation on Teacher Pay

The DeSoto Explorer editorial board notes that one mill does not raise the same amount of taxpayer money as one mill in Shawnee Mission. It concludes that “the challenge to the district is real, and the board needs to focus on finding a strategy to attract and retain quality educators for the new market place.”

Here’s a strategy: embrace merit pay. Teachers may be willing to accept a lower pay scale that applies to everyone if given the opportunity to earn more money through hard work and excellence in teaching.
