Using Technology to Expand Teacher Corps

Teacher shortage, meet technological solution.

People wanting to earn a teachers certification in western Kansas can take classes from Newman University, based in Wichita, without making the long trip.

“After completing their general education classes at a community college, students in Ulysses will be able to earn their education credits by taking interactive television courses broadcast from a remote location — the live courses are offered in Garden City.”

Ulysses is roughly 50 miles from Garden City. It’s roughly 250 miles to Wichita, meaning that being able to take classes in Garden City could be very helpful for some people, and potentially expand the pool of teachers.

On the other hand, there’s a substantial upfront cost: $25,000 for the Newman program.
